I started out when I was about 10 years old deer hunting with a pump .410 shotgun with a slug. After a few my dad and mom gave me a 20ga pump shotgun which I used slug and buck shot. I then got a Marlin 30-30 for Christmas and used it until I got my .270 a few years ago. Now I like the 30-30 because it is a great gun for short range (25yds) shots and I can still use it at 200 if I need to. Now I have had many people tell me they love a rifled barrel hot gun such as a 12ga and a slug. I have heard that some have taken deer at 300+ yards with a 12ga slug. I personally don't want to but what do you think? What are your thoughts about it Shotgun or small Cal. Rifle?

Good topic
I also started with a 410 and a small caliber rifle.
Today i generally take deer with a rifle as opposed to a scattergun. Just a personal choice of mine. While a slug will sure drop bambi,..i have found that a cartridged round destroys less of the meat and is far more accurate for instant "drops".
Not ragging on the shotguns,..But I use them mainly for bird and home defense these days,...Have 3 types,...winchester 1300,..Mossberg 500 and a Remington 58 semi-auto...
Large game,...=...large caliber for me.
I've been thinking about a rifled barrel for my Remmington 12. Just think it would be awesome in a heavy brush situation. While I've taken several deer at great distance, most of mine have been close range as I wandered the woods.
Have you found a good source for the 870 Pump?
